Civil & Interfaith Marriage for International Couples
Civil and interfaith couples often have the widest range of possible jurisdictions but also some of the most complex legal questions. The correct marriage route can depend on nationality, religion, domicile, residence, local marriage restrictions and whether the couple needs the resulting marriage recognised in another country.
What Is a Civil Marriage?
A civil marriage is created under the civil law of a jurisdiction rather than relying solely on a religious ceremony. The competent authority, licence or notice requirements, witnesses, venue and registration rules differ from country to country.
What Is an Interfaith Marriage?
An interfaith marriage involves parties from different religious backgrounds. Whether a particular religious ceremony is available and whether a civil route is preferable depend on the parties’ faiths and the law of the chosen jurisdiction.
Choosing the Marriage Jurisdiction
International couples should choose a jurisdiction only after considering legal capacity, attendance requirements, documentation, registration, recognition abroad and immigration consequences. A country that permits a convenient ceremony may still create additional recognition steps elsewhere.
Online or Remote Civil Marriage
Some jurisdictions permit forms of remote participation, while others require personal attendance. E-Marriages does not describe an online video ceremony as universally valid. We first identify the law under which the marriage is intended to be created.
Proxy Marriage
A representative may be permitted in some legal systems and prohibited in others. See our Proxy Marriage guide for the distinction between attorney representation and remote participation.
International Recognition
A civil or interfaith marriage valid where celebrated may still need translation, legalisation, registration or additional evidence abroad. Immigration authorities can impose separate requirements.
